Isolation Series

Without access to my studio for during the Covid-19 lock-down over spring 2020, I worked on a new series of drawings from a small table at home with the few materials I had on hand. Isolation Series includes a group of numbered works titled Distancing Drawings (each 9 x 10 inches) and Paradox Drawings (each 9 x 12 inches). The compositional design is intended to convey the explicit choreography assigned to physical distancing.

Like many artists, I found it difficult to concentrate on studio work in the early stages of the pandemic. Part of the process with this work included utilizing a drafting template. Creating these comparatively methodical drawings presented a manageable means to focus on studio production, and offered a sense of order in uncertain times. The measured spacing of forms within the template seemed an appropriate metaphor for ‘together apart’. Silver ink, plus cool grey and sky blue light colour pencils, make up the drawing media used in the series. Restricting the palette added to the sense of ordering and control in the work. The result also imparts associations with science data, diagrammatic graphs, and with the cosmos, which interested me.
